Teaching Update

Wow... that about sums it up. I have a new understanding of life. The hardships, sacrifices and joy we are seeing are beyond imagination.

A lady shared her life story today. Their firstborn and only child died at just over a year. She and her husband were devastated, but went on to adopt 18 orphans. When I say they had no means to support them, I am speaking literally. However, they felt called to offer these children love, something far better than they had as orphans! Her husband is away on a university scholarship. When I asked her if she had help raising all these children, she smiled and said yes, "the Father, Son and Holy Spirit." Her faith was inspiring.

There is a strong presence of witchcraft and false religions. They need our prayers here against the evil one! Poverty is prevalent, however, these pastors and leaders are making huge sacrifices to bring hope and the light of Jesus to some very dark places. One young man from Kampala (a 12 hour bus ride) told me today that he is an engineer. Not unusual in the US but I was shocked for Karamoja. He explained God had called him here. He had finished his mission and was to head home, however, his pastor asked him to stay 2 more years for NO PAY. I asked him how he would live. He said he was given a place to live and had his food provided during this conference... then he would just have to trust God for everything... even food. Wow. I do not know sacrifice.

Stories go on and on... as far as our teaching goes, it has been very well received. Tomorrow, Jonathan is tackling PURITY... a huge problem here. It is clear that what we would consider a healthy marriage is virtually unheard of. They were astounded that Mark and I had been married 33 years and shared respect, friendship, kindness and faithfulness and love. (Thanks EPM for providing The Purity Principle) We will wrap up our work with core values and cover respect. That will be our last day with our new friends because we must travel Friday to Yei, South Sudan because there is not another plane before classes begin there on Monday. Please pray that we finish strong, that God is glorified and lives will be changed. It is very hot, muggy, stuffy... and joy-filled. I wish you could experience their worship in song. EXCITING! Please pray also for the hearts of the students that we will be with next week.

News from our Team

DEBBIE writes Tuesday morning (Monday night our time)

Hi Everyone! We are having internet difficulties.  Sorry for so few updates. We enjoyed attending 3 different churches on Sunday.  Jonathan preached twice.  Mark and I were informed on Saturday that the pastors of our churches preferred to do their own preaching.  About halfway through Debbie’s service, the pastor had a message delivered to her that she would be sharing God’s word.  Ok.  No preparation except prayer!  Although it was a bit brief, a message on love and marriage was shared.  Church lasted about 4 hours and was inspiring for us all!  We enjoyed lunch in town with Dr. Moses and a couple other new friends. It POURED down rain on our way back “home”.  This was their first rainfall in 2 ½ months.  Now remember, we walk everywhere.  We appreciated a big tree and then a porch over the course of our mile and a half walk back! We spent time writing out our lessons and organizing our activity “props”.  The leaders we have spoken with are excited for the conference.

Monday, Dr. Moses arranged for us to travel to two of the Peace Villages.  I cannot even describe that experience.  It was an experience of the heart, not one that can be explained with words.  Their beautiful smiles and eagerness to greet us belied their lack of basic needs such as food and fresh water.  Pictures will show this better but internet is not allowing us to send these yet.  We met many new Christians and a gentleman called the Miracle man that was cured during the medical team outreach.  He had been shot years earlier and had to walk hunched over with a cane.  He was prayed over and literally threw away his cane and stood up and walked.  We saw him walking quickly, almost sprinting at times!  This healing God provided surely encouraged so many Karamjong’s new Christian faith.  The trip took about 9 hours.  We were all ready for a shower!

We are planning again with Dr. Moses.  The turnout is even better than they expected, which is great but has outgrown the facility.  We prayed for the details to get worked out.  And they are…. A church nearby is letting us meet there instead of in the planned conference room.  Dr. Moses and his Clide team are very relational with all the people, love Jesus and very talented at organization.  PLEASE PRAY that God goes before us and prepares the hearts of the attendees and that HE uses us to effectively build relationships and trust with the people and that meaningful messages and activities are shared.

Hello from Uganda

After 25 hours of travel, we arrived in Kampala, Uganda at 1am. We only had one near catastrophe... when we went to check in for our last flight, they said it was closed and we couldn't board. Then the gentleman said just a minute, let me see if I can get it reopened. He did and we got on. Missing it would have prevented us from catching the flight to Karamoja for 3 days! So after our late night arrival in Kampala,we were up by 5:15am to be picked up for our final flight. Everything went smoothly and all three of us felt healthy and excited to see what God had in store! Your prayers for travel mercies were answered,

We were warmly received in Moroto, in the Karamoja region, by Jonathan's friends. It was a delight to watch the joy of the reunion. The people are so grateful for Jonathan's return and GSCC's support. Debbie suddenly became very sick, apparently due to dehydration. Within a few hours, miraculously she was completely healed and back up on her feet. Praise the Lord.

Dr. Moses asked us to split up and visit 3 of the local churches on Sunday, which we were eager to do. Then we were asked to each preach. Jonathan of course was alright! Mark, and especially Debbie, were like... uh oooooookkkkkk? God help us! The people are eager to hear from us and about God. Please pray for these messages!

We will spend today and tomorrow learning the people's needs and preparing all of our lessons. Please pray God guides us and maximizes this valuable time with these very warm people. They have a huge heart for God and want to reach more of their people with His message of hope.

Monday we plan to travel to one of the Peace Villages. We eagerly look forward to seeing how God is working there and how the GSCC wells have enabled these new communities to be a possibility.

Thanks for being here with us through the power of your prayers. Only God can give us the messages these people need and desire, please pray He uses us in mighty ways.

Ongoing Prayer

While we are waiting to hear from the team, let's unite in ongoing prayer. PRAY for sleep and rest for the team. According to schedule they should have arrived in Moroto by now after a VERY LONG trip across the waters and down into the heart of Africa. PRAY as they adjust to climate, time change (they are 11 hours ahead of us....check out the clocks to the right)...food, culture etc. PRAY for a GREAT weekend with the CLIDE staff before they start teaching on Monday. Thanks for being on the team.

Pray for an intimate walk with God…this is essential to effective ministry anywhere and is the best safe guard against discouragement and failure. Pray Pray for good times in the Word, in prayer and worship.

Pray for their physical, mental and emotional well being.

Pray that they will be able to demonstrate purity, humility, boldness, wisdom, patience, love, teachable spirits, and that the power of the Holy Spirit will be evident in their lives.

Pray for God’s protection on their families back home.

Pray that God will raise many to pray for them as they travel.

Pray for the team’s relationships with each other, and those they will be working with.

Pray that they will understand cultural nuances as they work with national friends.

Pray for clear communication and deep bonding with those they have come to serve.

Pray for wisdom, courage, tact, discernment, safety and God’s provision.

Pray for prepared hearts to hear and understand as they teach the Scriptures and Leadership Principles.

Pray that God will grant wisdom as they teach, and that it will have a long-term effect on those who attend these lessons. Pray for many to come to a deeper knowledge of Christ.

Pray for strength and stamina and for protection against sickness, proper sleep, rest and rejuvenation. Pray for travel mercies as they travel both internationally and domestically.
